The Hush Before Warsh.

Thursday's narrow AI melt-up cools into a cautious hush before Chair Warsh's first Jackson Hole keynote; the pre-market board is all earnings binaries and a busted PayPal buyout, so the watchlist stays empty with no clean single-name flow to build on.

Today's Tape

Thursday's narrow AI melt-up gives way to a cautious hush before the Chair speaks.

Futures are mixed and the Nasdaq is giving back part of yesterday's NVIDIA-led surge as the tape waits on Chair Warsh's first Jackson Hole keynote (10:00 AM ET). The overnight board is busy but idiosyncratic — Elastic, Affirm and Gap gapping up on earnings, Marvell and Rubrik selling the news, and PayPal down ~14% after a ~$53B buyout consortium walked away. None of it is the clean, fresh single-name options flow that earns a card, so the watchlist stays empty into the Fed event and next week's software-and-semis earnings wall.

Header Reading · as of ~8:40 AM ET
GeopoliticalChina–Taiwan chip-export controls LIVE (structural) — HBM/equipment curbs and Taiwan's own entity-list additions are first-order for the semis complex leading this tape. Mid-East/oil easing; Fed-independence overhang persists after the Supreme Court kept Gov. Lisa Cook in her seat pending the "for cause" case.
FedWatch · Sept 16Hold ~59% / Hike ~34% / Cut ~7% (as of Aug 28). A cut is not priced — the live debate is hold vs. hike; the hawkish-hold regime is unchanged.
10Y Treasury4.69%, little changed; VIX ~14.5 (low, complacent), DXY ~99.1 firm.
WTI Crude~$83, −0.5% on Hormuz de-escalation signals. SPR ~289.7M bbl (below 300M, lowest since 1983) leaves a thin buffer if the Mid-East reheats.

Macro Environment

A. Futures & breadth. Overnight: Dow futures +0.1%, S&P 500 roughly flat to −0.1%, Nasdaq-100 −0.3% to −0.7% — the index giving back part of Thursday's AI-driven run into the Warsh keynote. That sits on top of a strong but hyper-narrow prior session (Thursday: S&P 500 7,731 +0.72%, Nasdaq 26,541 +1.57%, Dow 53,569 +0.20%; NVDA +8.7%, SMH +3.1%, XLK +3.2% did the lifting after Wednesday's print). Breadth: 1 of 11 sectors green (Technology +3.2% leading, Consumer Staples −1.4% lagging); S&P +0.72% but equal-weight −0.31% — a narrow tape carried by a handful of AI names, not a broad advance.

B. Loop-closure (since the last brief). The week's macro prints landed roughly as feared on the hawkish side. July core PCE (Wednesday) rose +0.2% m/m and +3.3% y/y — in line, but headline PCE ran +3.7% y/y (0.1pp above consensus) and personal income was firm at +0.4%; sticky-but-in-line core keeps the hold-vs-hike debate alive rather than opening the door to a cut. Q2 GDP's second estimate held at +1.5% annualized (unchanged), and Thursday's weekly jobless claims came in at 203K vs 208K expected — a firm labor read that further undercuts the case for a September cut. Net: the data did nothing to soften the hawkish-hold regime.

C. Overnight items. The one genuinely idiosyncratic story is PayPal −14%: the Advent/Stripe-led consortium abandoned its ~$60.50/share (~$53B) takeover approach, and the deal premium is unwinding. Elsewhere it is macro/positioning: oil is easing (WTI ~$83) on Hormuz de-escalation signals, gold and silver miners are quiet, and crypto is firm (bitcoin ~$79K, ether +3%) — tells, not single-name catalysts. Positioning is frozen ahead of the 10:00 ET Warsh keynote.

D. Pre-market movers. The gap board is deep but almost entirely resolved binaries and corporate actions, not fresh flow. Earnings gappers: ESTC +22.8% (beat + guide raise), GAP +16.7% (beat + raise), AFRM +12.8% (beat + raised outlook), BEKE +10.0% (post-earnings continuation), SHAZ −8.0% (Sharon AI Q2 revenue miss / large non-cash loss), MRVL −7.7% (double beat but a Q3 gross-margin step-down after a ~187% run), RBRK −6.0% (beat-and-raise sold the news at a 52-week high). Corporate actions: SOLS +14.8% (terminated its Element Solutions merger + $500M buyback), PYPL −14.4% (deal collapse, above), and VISN −41.2% — mechanical, an ex-dividend for a $5.00 special distribution, not fundamentals. Thematic: UMC +10.0% (Intel-collaboration buzz + capacity expansion), ALNY −5.3% (a valuation/momentum unwind, no fresh headline). None carries the confirming, ungated, same-session options flow that would earn a card.

E. Catalyst age. Thursday's AI leadership is a full session old and largely absorbed; this morning's gaps are resolved earnings binaries (options already crushing) and one-off corporate actions with no confirming same-session flow. The next fresh, market-wide catalyst is calendared: Chair Warsh's Jackson Hole keynote at 10:00 ET, followed next week by the software-and-semis earnings wall (DELL/PANW/MDB Tue 9/1; AVGO/SNOW/HPE Wed 9/2).

Net read-through: The gate is fully clear for a second straight session — nothing crosses the veto threshold, and semiconductors (SMH put/call 1.65) are un-gated even as the complex leads. The elevated semis and tech put counts sit under a rising complex, which reads as hedging into next week's earnings, not distribution. Energy (XLE) is also un-gated at the ETF level, though on a standing discipline an energy name still needs a name-specific driver — not an oil headline — to earn a directional read. All of which is moot today: no name clears to a card regardless.

03

Rate & Macro Context

A. Rates. The 10-year yield sits at ~4.69%, little changed, with the dollar firm (DXY ~99.1) and VIX low at ~14.5 — a complacent, risk-on backdrop that has let the narrow AI leadership run. There is no easing impulse in the curve: with core PCE stuck at 3.3% and the labor market still firm, the front end is anchored to a hawkish hold and the market prices no September cut.

B. Today's data. A light calendar — no high-impact 8:30 ET print. Chicago PMI lands at 9:45 ET and the University of Michigan final consumer-sentiment revision at 10:00 ET (the same slot as the Warsh keynote, which will dominate). July PCE, Q2 GDP and weekly claims already printed earlier this week (Section 1B).

C. Geopolitics. The standing category sweep flags several live tails, with the semis-relevant one on top: China–Taiwan chip-export controls (HBM and equipment curbs, plus Taiwan's own entity-list additions) remain structurally active and first-order for the complex leading this tape. Mid-East/oil is easing (WTI ~$83 on Hormuz de-escalation), though a depleted SPR keeps the tail live; Russia–Ukraine sanctions and the Fed-independence overhang (the Supreme Court's Lisa Cook ruling) round out the watch list.

D. Fed speakers. Recap — the week's substantive Fed inputs were the data prints (Section 1B), not a speaker. Today the marquee event is Chair Warsh's first Jackson Hole keynote at 10:00 ET — watch whether he leans on sticky 3.3% inflation (rates-stay-high / hike tilt) or on any labor softening (dovish); his known pattern is to stay deliberately vague, so treat a clean repricing as the low-probability outcome. Vice Chair for Supervision Bowman follows at 12:45 ET. Both land after this brief; the read-through carries to Monday.

04

Watchlist & Signal Confluence

No directional watchlist cards today

Every name moving pre-market falls into a bucket the framework does not card: an already-reported earnings gap with no confirming same-session options flow (ESTC, AFRM, GAP, BEKE, MRVL, RBRK, SHAZ), a one-off corporate action (PYPL's collapsed buyout, SOLS's terminated merger + buyback, VISN's mechanical special-dividend ex-date), or a theme/context move (UMC on deal buzz, ALNY on a valuation unwind). With options not yet open, none of these carries the fresh, ungated, single-name flow that confirms a direction — and into a hawkish-hold Fed with the Chair about to speak, positioning is frozen. There is no clean signal to build a call on, and the framework will not manufacture one.

Strong Signal Confluence status: Suppressed. The top tier requires three consecutive correct Strong-tier reads before it activates; the count stands at 0 of 3, and no name qualified as a Strong-tier candidate today. Every name, when cards resume, stays capped at Moderate until that bar is met.

Flow-vs-price check — NVDA. The tape's loudest flow is a wall of ask-side call accumulation in NVIDIA's January-2027 upside (the $200 and $230 strikes, tens of millions in premium) — genuine, one-sided conviction. But it is post-print continuation on a name that already ran +8.7% Thursday and sits well above its 50-day (~$208), and it lands into a mixed-futures morning. An absorbed catalyst plus an extended chart is context, not a fresh card — the flow describes where the momentum crowd is leaning, not a same-session edge.

Mild hedging tilt

Index net premium is roughly balanced with a mild hedging tilt (portfolio protection is the baseline) — sentiment context that feeds the macro-regime read, never a standalone veto. The single-name flow that exists is either post-print momentum (NVDA), an earnings gap already resolved (MRVL), or a lean into next week's print (AVGO) — none of it a fresh same-session directional tell.

Observational flow note. The standout is NVIDIA's LEAPS call accumulation, but that is the momentum crowd extending an absorbed catalyst, not a signal we can card. Marvell shows the mirror image — call volume yet net premium turning negative as the stock gaps down on its margin guide — a flow-vs-price alignment to the downside that is nonetheless a resolved earnings binary. No name qualifies for a directional grade today.

Earnings Calendar · rolling 14-day

Reported since the last brief. Three >$2B names printed Thursday after the close, and the pattern is the tell. MRVL · Marvell (AMC 8/27) — a double beat (rev $2.74B +37% YoY; EPS $0.94) and a raised guide (Q3 rev ~$3.15B, custom silicon targeted >$10B by FY29), yet shares are −7.7%: the Q3 gross-margin guide stepped down (to ~57.5–58.5% from 58.9%) on lower-margin custom-silicon mix, and after a ~187% YTD run the market punished the margin, not the demand. ADSK · Autodesk (AMC 8/27) — beat and raised revenue guidance, but the free-cash-flow midpoint was cut and the MaintainX deal is dilutive → ~−5%. ULTA · Ulta Beauty (AMC 8/27) — a clean beat-and-raise across the board, +2%. The read-through: AI/semis and software can beat and raise revenue and still sell off when margin or free-cash-flow quality slips at a priced-for-perfection multiple; the resilient consumer name rose. No >$2B U.S. name reports today (8/28) after the close.

The week ahead — the marquee vol read (what options traders care about): a dense software-and-semis cluster prints Tuesday and Wednesday. Rich options into each print collapse the moment it's out, so a directional position needs the move to clear the expected range to overcome the vol reset — and guidance/revenue (not the EPS beat/miss) usually drives the reaction.

AVGO is the headline event — the AI-infra bellwether and the largest notional of the group — but the richest options belong to NetApp (IV rank 98) and MongoDB (80); expensive premium that crushes on release is the recurring earnings-season trap. CRDO and GTLB (both Tue 9/1 AMC) also carry elevated vol.

Macro-to-Options Bridge

Yesterday's rally and today's pause are the same story: leadership has narrowed to a handful of AI names while the average stock stalls, and the whole tape now hangs on the Fed. With core inflation stuck at 3.3%, a firm labor market and no cut priced, long-duration growth has no rate tailwind — it is running on earnings and momentum alone, which is precisely why the margin-quality repricing in Marvell and Autodesk matters: at these multiples, a beat-and-raise is no longer enough if free-cash-flow or gross-margin quality slips. For an options audience the practical takeaway is the week-ahead math: implied vol is rich into the DELL/PANW/MDB and AVGO/SNOW clusters and will reset hard on each print, so defined-risk structures are the way that expensive premium is typically expressed — and a directional read only earns a tier once same-session flow confirms it. Into Warsh's keynote, the framework stays flat.

Next-Session Setup · Monday, August 31

  • Warsh is the swing. His first Jackson Hole keynote (10:00 ET today) and Vice Chair Bowman (12:45 ET) land after this brief; whether he validates the hold-vs-hike framing or opens any door sets Monday's tone.
  • A wall of earnings. DELL/PANW/MDB (Tue 9/1), AVGO/SNOW/HPE/NTAP (Wed 9/2) and LULU/ZS/DOCU (Thu 9/3) bring rich, crush-prone options — the marquee vol read (Section 6) is the map.
  • The margin-quality repricing. Marvell and Autodesk beat and raised revenue yet sold off on margin/FCF; watch whether that becomes the season's dominant tell for extended AI names.
  • Watchlist: empty pending a fresh, ungated, single-name flow signal; the earnings and theme moves remain context, not cards, absent idiosyncratic flow.
