Today's Tape

Chips lead a quiet, defensive retreat as the market clears the decks for NVIDIA and Jackson Hole.

Futures are modestly lower (Dow and S&P −0.1%, Nasdaq −0.4%) with the whole memory-and-optical complex gapping down pre-market — Micron, Marvell, Sandisk, Western Digital, Seagate, Coherent and Lumentum all lower — a correlated de-risking ahead of NVIDIA's Wednesday print, sharpened overnight by a fresh push in Washington to tighten China's access to chip-making equipment. Underneath the pullback, Friday's crypto breakout is still carrying (bitcoin proxies bid) and a new front opened over the weekend: US–Canada trade talks collapsed and 50% tariffs took effect. None of it is a clean, single-name options signal, so the watchlist stays empty into a heavy week — NVIDIA earnings (8/26), the PCE inflation print (8/26) and the Jackson Hole symposium (Warsh keynote 8/28).

Header Reading · as of \~8:40 AM ET

GeopoliticalTwo live policy tails — **Trade/tariffs**: US–Canada talks collapsed Friday; 50% US tariffs on \~$28B of Canadian goods took effect, with Canada vowing to match dollar-for-dollar. **China chip controls**: a House committee advanced 20 new export-control measures tightening China's access to advanced semiconductor equipment — first-order for the chip complex selling off this morning. (Iran/oil simmering; WTI eased.)

FedWatch · Sept 16**Hold \~68%** / Hike \~31% / Cut \~1%. Last confirmable CME print Aug 20 (no fresh intraday read; hawkish-hold, hike-risk regime unchanged).

10Y Treasury**4.74%** (2Y 4.24%, 30Y 5.27% — long end elevated; +5bp Friday, the week's weight on long-duration tech).

WTI Crude**\~$85.65**, −1.6% (Brent \~$93.09) — easing as the market awaits details of the toughest-yet Iran sanctions campaign; a depleted SPR still leaves thin buffer against a supply shock.

## Macro Environment

**A. Futures & breadth.** Overnight: Nasdaq-100 futures −0.4%, S&P 500 −0.1%, Dow −0.1% — a chip-led pullback (Micron −3%, AMD \~−2%, Broadcom \~−1%; SOXX \~−2%) with the broad market steadier, i.e. rotation *out* of semiconductors rather than a broad risk-off. That follows a modestly higher Friday (S&P +0.41%, Nasdaq +0.35%, Dow +0.89%). Breadth (Friday): 6 of 11 sectors green (Financials +1.16% leading, Real Estate −2.39% lagging); S&P +0.41% but equal-weight +0.63% — a broad advance, with rate-sensitives (real estate, utilities) lagging as the long end sold off.

**B. Loop-closure (since the last brief).** No tier-1 economic data printed between Friday's close and this morning; Friday's slate and the July FOMC minutes were the week's substantive items (recapped in Friday's brief). The weekend's market-moving news was policy, not data — the US–Canada trade breakdown and the escalated Iran sanctions campaign. This morning's only scheduled release is the Chicago Fed National Activity Index (July) at 8:30 AM ET (consensus 0.10 vs 0.06 prior) — a second-tier read whose result carries to tomorrow's recap. The heavy data lands mid-week (see 1E).

**C. Overnight items.** Three movers, all macro/positioning rather than single-name catalysts: (1) the **US–Canada trade collapse** — 50% tariffs now live on \~$28B of Canadian goods with dollar-for-dollar retaliation threatened, a risk to industrials, autos and materials with cross-border supply chains; (2) **semiconductor de-risking** — the memory/optical complex gapping down into NVIDIA's print, amplified by the new China chip-equipment export-control push; (3) **crypto strength** carrying from Friday's regulatory-driven breakout. Crypto sentiment (IBIT/BLOK): IBIT +6.0%, BLOK +1.7% — risk-on in crypto even as equities lean defensive; crypto-ETF put/call is structurally noisier than equity-sector readings and is sentiment context only, not a gate input.

**D. Pre-market movers.** The board was overwhelmingly one theme — a **semiconductor / memory / optical** down-complex (**AAOI**, Micron, Marvell, Seagate, Western Digital, Coherent, AXTI and peers all indicating lower pre-market) — a correlated de-risking into NVIDIA's print and the fresh China chip-equipment controls, not idiosyncratic flow. These were early pre-market indications that largely narrowed at the cash open, so no firm percentage is assigned to them. The one clean single-name driver is **AAOI** (Applied Optoelectronics), gapping lower on a dilutive $600M at-the-market stock offering — but it sits inside the gated tech complex. The only notable non-chip prints are NBTX (biotech) and **PDD** (reports before the open today). Every one of these is a cohort/theme move, a dilution/earnings gap, or a thin print — none carries the fresh, confirming, ungated single-name options flow that earns a card.

**E. Catalyst age.** The dominant themes are multi-day and largely absorbed: the chip de-risking has run for several sessions, and the crypto/hard-asset bid is now days old. Today's individual gaps (AAOI's dilution, PDD's pre-open earnings) are same-morning but either category-gated or a resolved binary with no confirming same-session flow. The next fresh, calendared catalysts are mid-week: NVIDIA earnings (Wed 8/26), the July PCE inflation print (Wed 8/26), and the Jackson Hole symposium (Warsh keynote Fri 8/28).

**Net read-through:** The broad market is clear — S&P, Nasdaq, Financials and Energy all sit well below the veto threshold. Two complexes carry heavy put concentration: semiconductors (SMH, put/call 3.72) and broad Technology (XLK, 2.53). In both, the put walls bracket next week's known events — NVIDIA earnings and the PCE print (8/26) and the Jackson Hole rate-path signal (8/28) — so they read as scheduled hedging into calendar risk rather than open-ended distribution, and are capped to defined-risk rather than fully vetoed. The standing chip-complex distribution caution still applies, and the semis are visibly de-risking pre-market. Moot in practice today, since no name clears to a card.

03

## Rate & Macro Context

**A. FedWatch & rate path.** The market prices roughly Hold 68% / Hike 31% / Cut 1% for the September 16 FOMC (last confirmable CME read Aug 20; the freshness gate is met — post-meeting, regime unchanged). The tilt is telling: the debate is hold-versus-*hike*, not hold-versus-cut. July's decision held at 3.50–3.75% on a fractured 9–3 vote with three regional presidents dissenting in favor of an immediate quarter-point hike, and Chair Warsh has said the Fed "won't hesitate" to act on inflation. Wednesday's July PCE (core seen +0.2% m/m, headline 3.7% y/y) is the key input into that path; a hot core keeps the hike scenario alive.

**B. Yield curve.** Bear-steepening at the long end: 2Y 4.24%, 10Y 4.74% (a \~50bp 2s10s spread), 30Y 5.27% — the long bond near multi-year highs. The rising term premium is the single biggest weight on long-duration growth and drove this month's Nasdaq pressure; whether the long end stabilizes into PCE is the swing factor for a duration-sensitive tech bounce.

**C. Fed speakers.** Recap — no scheduled Fed appearances today (the July minutes, recapped Friday, were the week's substantive Fed event). Preview: Richmond's Barkin speaks Tuesday (8/25); the marquee event is next week's Jackson Hole symposium (Aug 27–29), where Chair Warsh delivers his first keynote as chair on Friday, Aug 28 — the most consequential rate-path signal before the September meeting. Expect positioning to stay defensive into it.

**D. Geopolitics.** Two live tails feed the rate/tech tape. The US–Canada trade collapse (50% tariffs, retaliation pending) is a fresh inflation/growth cross-current the Fed cannot offset with policy. The China chip-export-control push is first-order for the semis complex the brief tracks constantly. Iran/oil has cooled (WTI \~$85.65) but the depleted SPR keeps the supply tail asymmetric.

**E. Inflation-print vol flag.** July PCE lands Wednesday, inside the 48-hour window by Tuesday. IV is structurally elevated into a major inflation print and crushes on release regardless of direction — directional options (calls or puts) bought in the run-up pay a vol premium that evaporates on the print, so the move has to clear the implied range to overcome the crush. Flag the vol headwind; defined-risk is the historically favored structure into the number.

04

## Watchlist & Signal Confluence

No directional watchlist cards today

Every name moving pre-market falls into a bucket the framework does not card: a correlated *theme* move with no single-name edge (the memory/optical chip complex de-risking into NVIDIA; the crypto proxies on bitcoin's carry), a *category-gated* name (AAOI's dilution gap sits inside the event-capped tech complex), a *resolved binary or thin print* with no confirming same-session flow (PDD's pre-open earnings; a scatter of small-cap prints that did not verify). With the macro backdrop leaning defensive — a hawkish-hold Fed, long-end yields near multi-year highs, a fresh trade-war escalation, and semis gated on event-dated hedging — and positioning frozen ahead of NVIDIA, PCE and Jackson Hole, there is no clean, fresh, single-name signal to build a call on. The framework will not manufacture one.

**Strong Signal Confluence status: Suppressed.** The top tier requires three consecutive correct Strong-tier reads before it is activated; the count currently stands at 0 of 3, and no name qualified as a Strong-tier candidate today. When cards resume, every name remains capped at Moderate until that bar is met.

**Flow-vs-price check — the chip complex.** Several semis carry ask-side *call* positioning (Micron's December calls; a $700K sweep in Western Digital's Sep $470 calls) even as the whole complex gaps *down* pre-market. Price and flow are diverging; institutional flow is historically the more informed signal, but into a gap-down and behind the event-dated sector gate, the calls need the cash open to reclaim ground before the read can be trusted — context, not a directional call.

Index net premium is structurally put-heavy (portfolio hedging is the baseline) — sentiment context that feeds the macro-regime read, never a standalone veto. SPY sits net-put with a >1 put/call while QQQ is balanced, consistent with defensive positioning into the mega-cap earnings and the symposium.

**Observational flow note.** The clearest tape is defensive/pre-event: NVIDIA's net premium is put-hedged into Wednesday, and the semis' ask-side call demand runs against a lower open. The crypto complex shows call demand chasing bitcoin's move, but that is theme beta, not a single-name edge. No name clears skew/flow confirmation for a directional grade today.

Options are expensive into every one of these prints and crush on release regardless of direction — a directional position has to clear the implied range to overcome the vol reset. And **guidance and revenue typically drive the post-print reaction more than the EPS beat/miss** — a beat on soft guidance still sells off. Cons. 07

## Macro-to-Options Bridge

Today's tape is a defensive, event-gated one. Long-end yields near multi-year highs (30Y 5.27%) keep compressing long-duration tech multiples, and a hawkish-hold Fed with a live hike scenario removes the reflex to buy the dip; layered on top is a fresh trade-war escalation (US–Canada 50% tariffs) that raises the input-cost bar for industrials, autos and materials with cross-border supply chains, and a China chip-export-control push aimed squarely at the semis complex. For an options buyer the practical read is where volatility is priced: semiconductor and mega-cap software IV is rich and rising into NVIDIA, PCE and the mega-cap prints (single-name IV ranks of 70–90 in CRM/CRWD/HPQ/ADSK), and it will reset hard on the events — so expensive premium is best expressed defined-risk, and calls-vs-puts direction is earned only once same-session flow confirms. Where volatility is cheap: the broad index and financials (SPY/XLF IV ranks \~10). With SMH and XLK gated on event-dated hedging and no ungated single-name signal, the disciplined stance is to wait for the catalysts to clear.

## Next-Session Setup · Tuesday, August 25

- **Chips / AI into NVIDIA** — the whole complex is gated and defensive; watch whether the memory/optical de-risking holds or reverses ahead of Wednesday's print, and whether the China export-control push gains legislative traction.
- **Trade-war escalation** — the US–Canada 50% tariffs are now live; track Canadian retaliation and spillover into industrials, autos and materials.
- **Tuesday data:** CB Consumer Confidence (High, est 90.3), New Home Sales and Case-Shiller (mid-morning), plus Richmond Fed's Barkin — with July PCE (Wed) the week's inflation anchor.
- **Rates** — whether the long end (30Y 5.27%) stabilizes or pushes higher decides how much room duration-sensitive tech has to bounce.
- **Watchlist:** empty pending a fresh, ungated single-name flow signal; the chip and crypto themes remain context, not cards, absent idiosyncratic confirming flow. Positioning likely stays defensive into NVIDIA, PCE and Jackson Hole.
