Today's Tape

A weekend call to slow AI meets a fresh oil shock — and the whole chip complex is for sale into a hawkish Fed.

Futures are sharply lower and tech-led: Nasdaq-100 futures are off roughly 1.6% while the S&P is down about 0.7% and the Dow barely 0.2%. Two things hit over the weekend. Frontier-AI leaders — Anthropic's Dario Amodei, echoed by OpenAI's Sam Altman, Elon Musk and DeepMind's Demis Hassabis — publicly urged the industry to *slow* the pace of AI development, which the market is reading as slower AI-hardware and compute demand; and oil spiked again, with Brent breaching $108 on the widening Iran–Hormuz conflict and a strike that shut a key Saudi pipeline. The result is a broad, correlated flush of the entire semiconductor and AI-infrastructure complex — down 5–8% across the board — with application and cybersecurity software the lone green cohort. None of it is a clean, single-name options signal, so the watchlist stays empty ahead of Wednesday's Federal Reserve decision.

Header Reading · as of \~8:40 AM ET

GeopoliticalMid-East / oil **LIVE** — an active US–Iran conflict has collapsed Strait of Hormuz transit, and a weekend drone strike hit and shut Saudi Arabia's East–West (Hormuz-bypass) pipeline. A depleted Strategic Petroleum Reserve leaves little buffer against a further supply shock.

FedWatch · Sept 16**Hold \~15%** / Cut \~0% / Hike \~85%. Last confirmable CME print Sept 12; a quarter-point *hike* is the base case into Wednesday's 2:00 PM ET decision.

10Y Treasury**4.96%** (2Y 4.63%, 30Y 5.35%) — long end at multi-year highs; the persistent weight on long-duration tech.

WTI Crude**\~$102**, up on the Iran/Hormuz escalation; Brent breached $108\. A depleted SPR means no cushion if supply tightens further.

## Macro Environment

**A. Futures & breadth.** Overnight: Nasdaq-100 futures −1.6%, S&P 500 −0.7%, Dow −0.2% — a tech-led risk-off gap. That reverses a broad prior session (Friday: S&P +0.85%, Nasdaq +0.96%, Dow +0.98% as oil briefly eased). Breadth (Friday's close): 9 of 11 sectors green (Technology +1.3% leading, Utilities −0.3% lagging); S&P +0.85% and equal-weight +0.80% — a broad advance, not a mega-cap distortion. This morning inverts it: the move is a rotation *within* tech, with mega-cap semis (NVDA, AMD, AVGO, MU) and the AI-hardware chain down 4–8% while software (CRWD, PANW, NOW, NET) trades higher — the headline index drop understates how concentrated the damage is in one cohort.

**B. Loop-closure (since the last brief).** The week's two inflation prints landed hot enough to harden the hike case. **PPI (August, Thu 9/10):** +0.4% MoM / +5.4% YoY headline (about 0.1pp above consensus), though core was a softer +0.2% MoM — the overshoot was energy (diesel +24% YoY), i.e. the oil spike bleeding into producer prices. **CPI (August, Fri 9/11):** headline +0.4% MoM / +3.4% YoY (in line), with core +0.3% MoM / +2.4% YoY — core's annual rate is actually the lowest since March 2021, but gasoline (+3.9%) drove the headline and kept the energy-inflation story alive. **UMich preliminary sentiment (9/12):** 47.8, a second straight drop and below the \~51 expected — consumer stress is rising even as the Fed leans toward tightening. Net: in-line-to-hot inflation plus an oil shock nudged rate-hike odds higher into this week's meeting. **Today (9/14):** no major US data release; the FOMC meeting begins Tuesday, with the decision and new dot plot Wednesday at 2:00 PM ET.

**C. Overnight items.** Three movers, all macro/thematic rather than single-name. (1) **The AI-slowdown call:** weekend commentary from frontier-AI leaders urging a slower, more deliberate build-out is being read as softer near-term demand for AI hardware and compute — a capex-derating narrative that hits the most compute-exposed names first (semis, the AI-infrastructure/neocloud cohort) while pushing a rotation bid into application and security software. (2) **Oil:** Brent above $108 (WTI \~$102) on the Iran/Hormuz conflict plus the shut Saudi pipeline — the live inflation tail into the Fed. (3) **Crypto:** bitcoin is roughly $78k (+1.6% over 24h) and ether \~$2,510 (+1.4%) — modestly *green*, so the 5–7% weakness in crypto miners (MARA, CIFR, WULF, CLSK) is high-beta risk-off riding the AI-infra selloff, not a bitcoin break.

**D. Pre-market movers.** The board is one correlated theme, not idiosyncratic edges. **Down — the AI-hardware/semis flush:** NOK −9.5%, GLW −9.0%, CRWV −8.7%, VRT −8.5%, NBIS −8.1%, LRCX −7.8%, AMKR −7.7%, MRVL −7.6%, KLAC −7.4%, AMAT −7.3%, ARM −7.2%, INTC −6.6%, MU −5.7%, AMD −5.6%, QCOM −5.1%, AVGO −3.9%, TSM −3.5%. Two carry a name-specific twist inside the beta: Corning (GLW −9.0%) on a newly filed $2B at-the-market equity offering (dilution fear), and Nokia (NOK −9.5%) on European AI/telecom-infra selling. **Up — the rotation and a few one-offs:** DFTX +12.6%, RUM +9.6% (revealed as a counterparty on a large Anthropic compute deal), OCUL +9.6%, TLX +7.6%, BNTX +6.0% (lung-cancer data at a medical conference), SRRK +5.6% (FDA re-submission), CRWD +5.4%, RELX +5.3%, PANW +4.9%, NOW +4.5%, MDT +3.9%, SAP +3.8%, FTNT +3.3%, NET +3.2%. Each is a cohort/theme move (AI-derating down, software rotation up), a resolved clinical/regulatory binary, or a one-off corporate action — none pairs a fresh catalyst with the confirming, one-sided same-session options flow that earns a card.

**E. Catalyst age.** The AI-slowdown call and the latest oil leg are fresh (0–1 session), but they are broad macro/positioning drivers, not single-name setups; the semiconductor derating is a multi-week theme now accelerating, and the biotech pops (BNTX, SRRK, DFTX) are resolved or ongoing clinical/regulatory binaries where implied volatility crushes on the event. The next fresh, calendar-known catalyst is Wednesday's FOMC decision and dot plot.

**Net read-through:** The broad tape is not gated — the S&P, Nasdaq and technology sit well below the veto threshold on Friday's data. Two complexes are constrained. **Semiconductors (SMH)** carry a put/call ratio of 3.4 with a mild downside skew — the options market is paying up for protection into a complex that is actively selling off on a fundamental catalyst, which reads as distribution rather than hedging-into-strength, so the chips stay fully gated. **Financials (XLF)** show an extreme headline put/call (15.6) but on very cheap options and a roughly balanced premium split — that is classic scheduled hedging into Wednesday's rate decision (and banks tend to benefit from a higher-rate outcome), so it caps to defined-risk rather than a full veto. Energy (XLE) is not gated, but its elevated IV rank reflects the oil bid. All of this is moot for cards today — no name clears to a directional read.

03

## Rate & Macro Context

**A. FedWatch.** Markets go into the September 15–16 meeting pricing roughly an **85% chance of a quarter-point hike** (to 3.75–4.00%), with a hold near 15% and effectively no cut on the board. A hot August jobs report, energy-driven inflation, and Chair Warsh's unusually hawkish Jackson Hole keynote (Aug 28) flipped September from a coin-flip to a hike-lean; last week's PPI/CPI prints then pushed the odds toward their highs. This is the rare meeting where the debate is hike-versus-hold, not cut-versus-hold.

**B. Rate path.** The swing factor is Wednesday's Summary of Economic Projections — the dot plot. With no 2026 cuts currently priced and the committee's own guidance pointing to "more work to do" on inflation, the market is bracing for a hawkish set of dots to confirm the hike, and any dovish surprise would be the larger repricing given how one-sided positioning has become.

**C. Yield curve.** 2Y 4.63%, 10Y 4.96%, 30Y 5.35% — a 2s10s spread of about +33bp, with the long end at multi-year highs. The rising term premium is the steady drag on long-duration growth multiples and amplifies mornings like this one when a tech-specific catalyst hits.

**D. Fed speakers.** Recap — none: the Fed is in its pre-meeting communications blackout (through Sept 17), so there is no scheduled or ad-hoc Fed commentary to close out. The last substantive word was Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole keynote (Aug 28), recapped in prior briefs. Preview — the marquee event is the FOMC decision and dot plot Wednesday, Sept 16 at 2:00 PM ET, with the Warsh press conference at 2:30.

**E. Event-vol flag.** Implied volatility is structurally elevated into Wednesday's rate decision and will crush on release regardless of direction — directional options (calls or puts) bought in the 48 hours before the meeting pay a vol premium that evaporates on the print, so a position has to clear the implied range to overcome the reset. Flag the vol headwind.

04

## Watchlist & Signal Confluence

No directional watchlist cards today

Every pre-market mover falls into one of three buckets the framework does not card: a correlated *theme* move with no single-name edge (the entire semiconductor and AI-infrastructure complex selling on the AI-slowdown call; the software/cyber names catching the mirror-image rotation bid), a resolved or ongoing *clinical/regulatory binary* where volatility crushes on the event (BNTX, SRRK, DFTX), or a one-off corporate action without confirming options flow (Corning's stock sale, Rumble's compute deal). With the macro backdrop firmly defensive — a hike-leaning Fed on Wednesday, long-end yields at multi-year highs, and an open oil tail — and the chip complex gated on genuine distribution, there is no clean, fresh, single-name signal to build a directional call on. The framework will not manufacture one.

**Strong Signal Confluence status: Suppressed.** The top tier requires three consecutive correct Strong-tier reads before it activates; the count stands at 0 of 3, and no name qualified as a Strong-tier candidate today (the one fresh name-specific catalyst, Rumble, sits against a risk-off tape with no confirming same-session flow). Every name, when cards resume, remains capped at Moderate until that bar is met.

**Flow-vs-price check — the semis.** Friday's tape was an up day, and the single-name flow was call-led across the chip complex — Micron, AMD and Dell all carried ask-side call buying and DELL a $550-strike call sweep. This morning every one of those names is gapping 4–8% *lower* on the AI-slowdown call. Price and flow are diverging; institutional flow is historically the more informed signal, but calls bought into Friday's bounce that are now being run over by a fresh, opposite catalyst are exactly the "chasing the last move" setup the framework fades — the read is context, not a card. It is also the standing chip-distribution pattern: heavy call flow into a bounce, then the complex sells the following session.

Net put — de-risking tilt into the Fed

Index net premium is structurally put-heavy (portfolio hedging is the baseline) — sentiment context that feeds the macro-regime read, never a standalone veto. Both SPY and QQQ ran net-put on Friday, and QQQ's put/call at 1.50 sits right at the level that flags broad de-risking into Wednesday's decision — consistent with this morning's sharply lower futures.

**Skew (25Δ risk-reversal, October monthly):** SMH +3.4% — the options market is paying up for semiconductor downside, confirming the distribution read behind the chip gate rather than a hedge into strength. There is no carded name to confirm today.

**Observational flow note.** The session's flow is dominated by two things: index and semi downside protection (QQQ, SPY, SOXX puts) and residual call positioning left over from Friday's bounce that is now offside. Neither is a single-name edge. No name qualifies for a directional grade today.

## Earnings Calendar · rolling 14-day

**Reported since the last brief.** The calendar was quiet — no marquee >$2B optionable name reported between Friday's brief and this morning; Monday's docket is small-cap only. The week is Fed-dominated, with the first real earnings not landing until mid-week.

**The week ahead — the marquee vol read** (the part options traders care about): the options are rich into several of these, and several carry elevated IV rank, so they crush on release regardless of direction — a directional buyer needs the move to clear the implied range, and guidance/revenue typically drives the reaction more than the EPS beat/miss itself.

## Macro-to-Options Bridge

Today's tape is one macro story hitting from two directions at once. A weekend call to slow the AI build-out re-rates the compute-demand thesis just as an oil-driven inflation spike pushes long-end yields to multi-year highs — and both punish the same cohort: high-multiple, long-duration AI hardware and infrastructure. For an options audience the practical picture is a barbell. Broad-index implied volatility is still cheap (the S&P's IV rank is in the low teens), so index-level downside protection is not expensive even after this move; but single-name and sector vol in the chip complex, and in energy, is bid — the places where the story actually lives are the places where premium is dear and crushes hardest. Layer Wednesday's FOMC on top: implied vol across rate-sensitive names is elevated into the decision and resets the moment it prints. The clean expression today is patience — the framework reads the tape as broad, correlated de-risking, not a single-name directional edge, and a directional call only earns a grade once same-session flow confirms one against, not with, a hostile macro backdrop.

## Next-Session Setup · Tuesday, September 15

- **The Fed is the week** — the FOMC meeting begins Tuesday; the decision and new dot plot land Wednesday 2:00 PM ET with a market-implied \~85% chance of a hike. Positioning stays defensive and options stay rich into it.
- **Does the chip complex stabilize or extend?** — after today's AI-slowdown flush, whether semis and the AI-infrastructure names find a bid or keep derating is the tell for how much the "slow AI" narrative sticks; the sector stays gated on distribution until the flow turns.
- **Oil / Hormuz tail stays live** — Brent above $108 with a thin SPR buffer keeps energy bid and the inflation side of the Fed's problem hard; watch for any Hormuz or Saudi-pipeline headline.
- **Earnings begin mid-week** — Lennar (AMC Tue 9/16) opens a light, non-tech week (FDX 9/17; AZO/KBH 9/22; GIS/CTAS/PAYX 9/23; COST/DRI 9/24). Watchlist stays empty pending a fresh, single-name flow signal.
